The

Steadfast Leaders

Peer-to-Peer Network

Recent data collected from Barna’s pastor poll indicated that U.S.pastors are currently in crisis and at risk of burnout.

As of March 2022, the percentage of pastors who have considered quitting full-time ministry within the past year sits at 42 percent.

Stress, loneliness, and political division are the three issues that rise to the surface and exhaustion, cynicism, and ineffectiveness (dubbed the “toxic trinity”) are often the result. Nonetheless, many of these leaders often believe strongly in their calling and continue to “tough it out” with the challenges of the job.

Over four in five of pastors who haven’t considered quitting (83%) say they believe in the value of their ministry, but pastors who haven’t thought about leaving ministry indicate “the immense stress of the job” (34%), “current political divisions” (32%) and feeling “lonely and isolated” (18%) are factors that have negatively impacted their ability to lead at their church within the past year. Only one in three pastorsis considered “healthy” in terms of well-being and current data indicates seven in ten pastors will not finish well in ministry.
