New Student Checklist

Congratulations on beginning your studies at SES! Complete the following checklist to ensure that you are ready for the start of classes.

1. ACCESS YOUR SES EMAIL

Access your SES email by clicking here. Your SES username is the first part of your SES email address. You received this information via an email from Populi sent to your primary personal email address you provided on your application. Be sure to check your spam folder if you do not see it. Please contact the Registrar if you cannot find the email with this information. NOTE: All official correspondence from SES will be sent to your SES email address. Check it often!

2. WATCH THE NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION VIDEOS

Visit the New Student Orientation open course and follow the prompts to work through each module in order to learn how to register for courses, navigate our course management system Canvas, and more important details.

3. ENROLL IN YOUR FIRST COURSE VIA POPULI

Log into our student management system Populi at ses.populiweb.com and enroll in your first course(s). You will use your SES email username and password to log in. Follow these simple steps to enroll (watch the New Student Orientation open course linked above for more detailed instructions):

1. Make sure you are on “My Profile” in the top menu (under the SES logo)
2. Click the “Registration” tab (under your name and degree info)
3. Select the appropriate term for which you want to enroll in the “Registering for” dropdown menu
4. Under “Courses Offered” set the “Enroll/Audit” dropdown menu to the appropriate selection
5. Click the green plus sign by the course in which you want to enroll (or audit)
6. Make sure to click “Save” in the upper righthand corner (above the course listings)

While you’re logged in, be sure to also:

A) Download your Degree Program Worksheet.
B) Download your Degree Portfolio Template.
C) Find your advisor under the “Student” tab in your Populi profile. We recommend contacting your advisor to discuss what courses would be best for you to complete your degree in a timely manner.
D) Read the current Student Handbook located under the “Files” tab (top left corner) within the “Shared” folder.
E) Buy your textbooks, new or used, from wherever you prefer. Use the syllabus posted for your course in Populi to get a list of books required for the course. Many required texts will also be available via the Digital Theological Library to which you have access. The syllabus is required to be posted one month prior to the start of class, after that, if it is not posted, please email your professor to get a book list.

4. ORIENT YOURSELF WITH CANVAS, OUR COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Log into our course management system Canvas at southernevangelicalseminary.instructure.com. You will use your SES email username and password (you may have to allow up to one hour after enrolling in your first course for your new account to sync with the system). Canvas is our learning management system and is where all coursework is submitted for live-stream and online courses. Most instructors even use Canvas for on-campus courses, so it is extremely important that you become familiar with it.

While you’re logged in, be sure to also:

A) Read the Online Education Manual.
B) Read this document on the basics of Zoom, our live-streaming platform.
C) If you have any questions about online education, email us at HERE.

5. PAY YOUR STUDENT SERVICES/TECH FEE AND ARRANGE TUITION PAYMENT

You will be invoiced for your tuition and fees via Populi. Payment plans are available upon request by contacting Student Accounts HERE.

Payments can be made in Populi by following these steps:
